Piedmont Kansas is a small town compared to say Piedmont Oklahoma. But this now tiny town is rich with history, history that needs to be documented. The Piedmont Christian Church, although now abandoned is over a century old.
Dating all the way back to 1905 the congregation used to meet in members’ homes while they raised funds to build a permanent home. That day finally came in 1910, the wood structure surely was built with the help of the community members and would have been a spectacle for the town. While the church’s early history isn’t well-documented, the later years were better. One of the charter members of the church was William W. Jones.
Churches have historically been known as a place of community and gathering. The nearby community of Eureka and their Christian Sunday School worked with Piedmont to put on a play. Thirty children participated and admission was 10 and 25 cents. Other acts of togetherness included the Ladies’ Aid of the church which would sometimes serve dinner for the community and events. A few other events in the ’80s and ’90s the church put on a wildlife program with the help of a Kansas Fish and Game biologist and also held a missionary program by the Rodney Anderson Family.
Over the next century, hundreds of funerals, marriages and baptisms were performed in these walls. Baptisms were done in the nearby South Otter Creek. Its age began to show and a new paint job was needed a few times throughout the years, including once in 1950.
The church celebrated its centennial on April 26th, 2010. It is a bit shocking that the church was still open at the time but that can be credited a lot to Pastor Bob Doughtery who carried the church through its final years. When people stopped filling up the pews, funerals became more common than weddings or baptisms, the hard years.
The church officially closed around 2011, the sign out front was removed around 2022. The building has been vandalized and continues to deteriorate in condition.
